On August 8, fellow Rotarian Wayne Schutz detailed the Derry Township Municipal Authority's (DTMA) Stormwater Management Program. Wayne gave us information about what stormwater is and what impact it has on local streams and (on a larger scale) the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  State and Federal regulations and permits continue to be more restrictive and require the Township to be more proactive in the ongoing effort to improve the water quality of our local streams and waterways.  With about 65 miles of aging underground pipes as well as inlets, detention basins, etc., it is also necessary to address the issue of infrastructure maintenance and capital improvements. In October, DTMA will implement a stormwater management fee, determined by the amount of impervious surface on a property. The fee will be proportional to the impervious surface of a property, and property owners, through the use of rain barrels, and other management practices, may be able to reduce the monthly stormwater management fee.
